Sales meeting in the Alan Partridge room?
If you’ve ever watched the satirical sitcom W1A and its brilliant sending up of the workings of the BBC, you may have noticed that the meeting room names are inspired famous old comedians (“We’re meeting in Frankie Howerd”).
What you may not realise, however, is that meeting rooms at the BBC really do have a penchant for naming their rooms after famous names (real and fictional) from yesteryear.
While thinkBooker is in the business of meeting room booking systems that drive efficiency, productivity and profit, we also understand that the rooms themselves can play an important role in the culture of a working environment.
Such as applying a bit of creativity and levity to the naming of them.
Here’s a few of our favourite named rooms.
Alan Partridge et al
When the BBC opened the doors to New Broadcasting House in 2012, it was revealed that the meeting rooms within the heartbeat of the entertainment department were all named after some the Beeb’s iconic fictional characters, including Dr Who, Morcambe and Wise, and Norfolk’s own Alan Partridge.

Throne Rooms at Instagram
Pop culture can certainly play a big part in our company meeting room names; especially true when it comes to the home of social media giants.
So perhaps it’s not a huge surprise to learn that Instagram opted for a Game of Thrones vibe when naming their rooms.
The question is, would you prefer to have your annual appraisal in King’s Landing, or launch a new marketing campaign within the walls of Riverrun?

Inconceivably Named Meeting Rooms
And while GoT maybe the fantasy epic of the modern era, it’s pre-dated by the gloriously witty classic form the 1980s, the Princess Bride.
The inspiration, it seems for tech company Mashery, who named their meeting rooms after characters from the movie.
Musical Food Rooms at Etsy
The staff at online retailer Etsy when all puntastic when it came to naming their meeting rooms, it seems, mashing together food and music for their venues.
The result being rooms such as:
- Rolling Scones
- Bon Bon Jovi
- Oreo Speedwagon
Acronym Attack at Buzzfeed
Over at Buzzfeed, on the other hand, they opted to moniker their meeting spaces with all those acronyms that have wormed their way into the lexicon of the mobile media generation – which is, in fairness, a reasonably appropriate theme for them.
Who’s for a weekly catch-up meeting at WTF?
While this may all seem a bit trivial, the meeting room names at an organisation can serve up genuine value to the brand. If, as they do at Facebook, the meeting room names are decided by a vote across the staff, then the process feeds into the positive and inclusive culture that the company is trying to convey. Bolstering the employer brand, and creating the perception of a culture that will appeal to its audience and future recruits.
